Utility Trench Excavation
Princeton Excavation opens, beds, and backfills utility trenches for water service lines, sewer laterals, electrical conduit, and gas runs in the Princeton area. We call in the NJ One Call markout, cut a clean trench to the depth your plans or code call for, and close it in compacted lifts. Your licensed plumber or electrician makes the connection; we handle the ground.
How the trench goes in
A trench is easy to dig badly. Ours are straight, safe, and closed up so you never know they were there.
Cut to Depth and Grade
Water lines go below the NJ frost line, around 36 inches. Sewer laterals need steady fall. We hold depth and slope with laser grade control so the pipe lays right the first time.
Bedded and Backfilled Right
Bedding sand under the pipe, hand-placed pipe zone backfill over it, warning tape where the utility calls for it, then backfill compacted in lifts so the lawn doesn't sink into a stripe next spring.
Marked Out and Shored
NJ One Call 811 markout before every dig, no exceptions. Where depth requires it, we use a trench box or bench the walls so the trench is safe for the trade working in it.
A trench, not a war zone
Most trenches get dug with a backhoe that tears a truck-wide path across the yard. We run a mini excavator with a narrow bucket instead, so a conduit run to a detached garage, EV charger, generator pad, or pool equipment leaves one clean line, not a construction site. Spoil goes on protection boards, topsoil stays separate, and the trench closes the same way it opened.
Where we work
We work for homeowners and for the trades directly. Electricians and plumbers bring us in because we open on schedule, hold their spec, and don't leave a trench sitting open waiting on anybody. If you have a trade lined up, we'll coordinate the timing with them ourselves.
How a job goes
From the first call to a clean handover
1. Site Walk
We come look at the property by appointment, check the access and any constraints, and go over your plans or what you have in mind.
2. Marking & Layout
We set the layout on the ground with laser accuracy. Depths, lines, and elevations are marked before anything gets dug.
3. The Work
We bring the right machine for the access, lay ground protection where it's needed, and keep the mess around lawns, trees, and hardscape to a minimum.
4. Clean Handover
You're left with a site that's ready to go and a yard that's still in one piece, set up for whatever's next.

No. Regulated connections belong to your licensed plumber, gas fitter, or electrician. We open the trench, bed it, and backfill after their work is inspected. That split is normal on these jobs, and we time the dig with your trade so the trench is open as briefly as possible.

A narrow, compacted line, not a scar. We keep topsoil separate from trench spoil, backfill in compacted lifts so the line doesn't settle, and rake the surface back out. On finished lawns we lay ground protection along the machine path too.
