Cranbury is really two kinds of property. Inside the village, Main Street and the blocks around Brainerd Lake are one of the best-preserved 19th-century streetscapes in New Jersey — old houses on deep, narrow lots with mature trees and not much room to maneuver. Outside it, the township has permanently preserved more than 2,000 acres of farmland, and the homes out there sit on big lots along roads like Plainsboro Road and Cranbury Neck Road, most of them on septic and well.

Those two settings ask for opposite things from an excavator. In the village, the job is precision: a footing beside a rubble foundation, a drainage line threaded past tree roots, a machine small enough to come down the driveway without touching anything. On the farm-edge lots, it's capacity: test pits for a septic replacement, brush and stump clearing, grading that moves real yardage.
