Excavation & Earthwork in Ewing, NJ

Princeton Excavation works Ewing's tight postwar lots with the smallest machine that can do the job — driveway tear-outs, trench digs, and stump removal on streets where a full-size rig simply won't fit.

Ewing filled in fast after the war. Neighborhoods like Glendale, Parkway Village, and the blocks around The College of New Jersey are rows of Cape Cods, bungalows, and colonials on small lots, with houses close together and driveways that were poured when cars were narrower. It's a great town to own in and a tight one to dig in.

The age of the housing stock is where most of our Ewing work comes from. Driveways poured fifty or sixty years ago have settled and cracked over old fill. Sewer laterals from the same era fail and need to be exposed. Trees planted when the neighborhood was new are now stumps that take up half a small front yard. All of it is excavation work that has to happen in a few feet of side yard.

That's what our compact end of the fleet is for, and every job is owner-operated — one person, one machine, in and out with the neighbors barely noticing.

Small lots, older ground

In Glendale and Parkway Village, side yards can be only a few feet wide, so the tracked mini skid steer and the 2.5–3 ton mini excavator do most of the work — small enough to slip between houses or through a gate, strong enough to break out a driveway or pull a stump. We walk the access first on every Ewing job, because the access is the job.

Toward West Trenton and Wilburtha along the D&R Canal, the housing runs a little older and the trees a little bigger, and low spots near the Shabakunk Creek drainages stay damp. Regrading, downspout runs, and trench work for failed laterals — dug clean and safe for the plumber — round out what we're typically doing on this side of the township.

How a job goes

From the first call to a clean handover

  1. 1. Site Walk

We come look at the property by appointment, check the access and any constraints, and go over your plans or what you have in mind.

  2. 2. Marking & Layout

We set the layout on the ground with laser accuracy. Depths, lines, and elevations are marked before anything gets dug.

  3. 3. The Work

We bring the right machine for the access, lay ground protection where it's needed, and keep the mess around lawns, trees, and hardscape to a minimum.

  4. 4. Clean Handover

You're left with a site that's ready to go and a yard that's still in one piece, set up for whatever's next.

Ewing: Common Questions

Yes — that's most of Ewing, and it's what our compact machines are for. The tracked mini skid steer fits about a 36-inch opening and the mini excavator isn't much wider, so we can reach backyards in Glendale, Parkway Village, and the TCNJ-area blocks without touching fences or foundations on the way in.
